Ishihara Takamasa (石原崇雅), better known by the stage name MIYAVI, is a Japanese guitarist, singer-songwriter, record producer, actor and philanthropist. He is known for his finger-slapping style of playing a guitar.
He is a former member of the visual kei rock band Dué le quartz.
In 2002, he started his career as a solo artist. In 2007, he became a member of the rock supergroup S.K.I.N. and in 2009, he founded his own company, J-glam.
In 2022, he became a member of the rock supergroup THE LAST ROCKSTARS.
Biography[]
Ishihara Takamasa was born September 14, 1981 in Osaka, Japan to a Korean father and a Japanese mother.
2019[]
On July 3, he released the digital single "Senkyakubanrai" in collaboration with DAOKO.
On July 24, MIYAVI released his 14th studio album NO SLEEP TILL TOKYO.
On December 18, 2019, it was announced during an event held at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo that he would transfer to Japanese talent company LDH JAPAN, starting in January 2020.[1][2] Miyavi, who had been independently active in the music industry for 10 years, explained his decision by mentioning that during those years he often wished for friends to work with and that he resonated with LDH's values, especially their approach to international expansion. He also announced that he would release two solo albums in 2020 and was planning a Japan tour.[3][2]
2020[]
On April 22, MIYAVI released his 15th studio album Holy Nights.
On September 4, he released the digital single "Holy Nights (Lockdown 2020)". On the 14th of the same month he released the digital single "Over The Rainbow".
2021[]
On September 15, MIYAVI released his 16th studio album Imaginary.[4][5]
On December 15, he attended and performed at the BVLGARI AVRORA AWARDS 2021 ceremony held in Chiba Prefecture.[6]
2022[]
On March 23, he released his 23rd CD single "Strike It Out".[7]
On June 16, it was announced that MIYAVI had moved record labels to Purple One Star, a label operated by Bandai Namco Music Live.[8][9] A day later, he released the digital single "Futurism".[10]
In the same year, MIYAVI's solo debut 20th anniversary project "MIYAVI 20th & Beyond" started. As the first work, he would release his first anime song cover album MIYAVIVERSE -Anima- on November 23.[11][12]
On November 11, during a press conference held by YOSHIKI, HYDE, SUGIZO and MIYAVI, it was announced that they had formed a new super band, THE LAST ROCKSTARS, which would debut in January 2023.[13][14]
On December 7, he attended the BVLGARI AVRORA AWARDS 2022 ceremony held in Tokyo.[15][16]
2023[]
On May 11, he released the digital single "RAYS" in collaboration with NOILION, which served as the opening theme for the final season of the anime ULTRAMAN on Netflix.[17][18][19] On the same day, it was announced that he would produce music for the Peace Communication Foundation's "Shape Of Future Project".[20]
On May 15, MIYAVI's official fan club was opened.[21]
On August 28, he received the "International Citizen Award" at the Japan-America Society of Southern California GALA Party held in Los Angeles, USA, in recognition of his activities as an artist based in both Japan and the United States and as the first Japanese ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).[22]
On September 6, MIYAVI performed as a support act at the Kanagawa show of Dogstar's Japan tour SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE POWER LINES AND PALM TREES Japan Tour 2023, a rock band with Keanu Reeves as bassist.[23]
From September to October, he held the MIYAVI "20th & Beyond" Japan Tour 2023 and MIYAVI "20th & Beyond Tour 2023" -Return of the Samurai Guitarist- in Europe and China to commemorate the 20th anniversary of MIYAVI's debut as a solo artist.[24][21]
From September to November WOWOW also broadcasted a special program in celebration of his 20th debut anniversary. On September 18, an exclusive live performance of the MIYAVI "20th & Beyond" Japan Tour 2023 was shown at the venue where he held his solo debut live 20 years ago, LINE CUBE SHIBUYA in Tokyo (Shibuya Public Hall at that time). October featured a music video collection, and November featured an interview and documentary on MIYAVI.[25]
2024[]
On February 1, it was announced that MIYAVI had become one of the first artists signed to the newly established record label "MoooD Records". The label was established by Bandai Namco Music Live with the aim of creating songs with a global perspective.[26]
On February 4, he released the digital single "Broken Fantasy / Tragedy Of Us".[27][28]
On April 3, he will release Lost In Love, the first part of his two-part album Lost In Love, Found In Pain with the theme of "Duality". In addition to songwriting partner Lenny Skolnick, the album was produced in Los Angeles with a variety of producers and co-producers. Visuals were created be by Darren Craig.[27][28]
