iCON Z ~Dreams For Children~ was an audition held by LDH JAPAN from August 2021 to March 2023.

The audition was announced on July 16, 2021, and served as a replacement for the LDH PERFECT AUDITION, which was supposed to take place in 2020 but had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There were three different divisions contestants can apply for, the vocal division, the rap division and the dance division. Entry in multiple categories was possible.[1]

EXILE HIRO, the creative director of LDH, was overseeing the general audition, with other LDH artists also producing their own projects. It was stated that this would be the largest-scale audition in LDH history with the debut possibilities being described as "endless", as it would be possible to have various new combinations be born from it depending on the contestants ability.[1][2][3][4][5]

All in all, approximately 48,000 applicants participated in the audition.[6] The audition process was broadcast on TV Tokyo every Sunday at 9 pm (21:00 JST), from October 24, 2021 to March 26, 2023.[7][8][9] The program was titled ~Yume no Audition Variety~ Dreamer Z and followed the lineage of the popular audition program "ASAYAN" on the same station.[10][11][12][13][14]

On May 21, 2022, the final screening of the boys division was held live at Nippon Budokan, with LIL LEAGUE announced as the winners.[15]

On September 25, 2022, the final episode of the girls division aired and the successful candidates who were able to become members of the final group were announced. The group was later named MOONCHILD.

Projects[]

Elegibility[]

People eligible to apply had to be between 12 and 25 years old (born between April 2, 1996 and April 1, 2009). For applicants who were minors, the consent of a parent or guardian was required. [1][2][3][4][5]

The application process was open to the general public. People of any gender and nationality were welcomed to apply, regardless if they were professionals or amateurs. Applicants must be able to sign a contract after acceptance, and if they were a member of a specific entertainment agency or label, they were requested to get the approval of the company before applying.[16]

Screening process[]

First Screening[]

A total of 48,000 people entered the competition by video entry, and 927 of them passed the first screening (2% acceptance rate).[6]

Second Screening[]

The second screening, held in Tokyo and Osaka over a total of six days, was a face-to-face screening with producers.[6] From this screening onwards, the boys and girls division were seperated and had differents tasks.

For the second screening of the dance section, the contestants had to choose one of the assigned dance tracks created by PKCZĀ® and perform it with their original choreography.[17] The main point was to see if the contestants could show how much they can draw out as dancers while making the best use of their own genre.[18]

In the vocal section, the contestants had to choose one of three given songs and sing one chorus. The songs were selected to be "Ame Nochi Hare" by GENERATIONS, "Starlight" by THE RAMPAGE and "The Only One" by FANTASTICS.[17] The contestants were tested on their ability to choose a song that suits their voice and their ability to express themselves freely.[18]

In the rap category, the contestants had to choose one of the three tracks created by SHOKICHI and perform it with original lyrics written by themselves.[17][18]

Ultimately, 30 contestants were chosen to move to the third screening.[18]

Third Screening[]

From January to April 2022, there was a training camp including the third (and fourth) screening.[19] The third screening itself was held in a TV studio, with the participants performing individually in front of the respective division producers.

The third screening began with a "Stage Judging" to test the star power and skills of the 30 contestants who made it through the first two rounds. They gathered on a special stage to perform in front of the male division producers EXILE HIRO (iCON Z general producer), EXILE AKIRA and EXILE SHOKICHI in the categories (vocals, rap and/or dance) they had passed in the second screening.

Additionally, it was announced that the final stage of the boys division would be held in front of a crowd at Nippon Budokan (Tokyo) in May.

Then, the top 10 of the successful applicants who were highly evaluated in the first three screenings were announced in a ranking format. Usually, LDH doesn't rank the auditionees, but "This time, we wanted to make it easier for the viewers to understand and see their growth, so we introduced a ranking system.", according to EXILE HIRO.[20]

This top 10 would not be the final ranking, and there were other successful applicants of the third screening.[21]

Next there was a "group battle" where the contestants would compete as groups. There were four groups in total, with the number of members varying from six to eight, taking into consideration the individuality and balance of the members. Additionally, it was possible for contestants to be members of more than one group.[22]

With this announcement, it was revealed that 10 of the 30 contestants who were not called for the group formations were eliminated at this point in the competition. The eliminated contestants included Mori Eita, Sugimoto Daiju, Aoki Ryudai, Kimishima Kento, Fukuda Shaharyar Sho, Maekawa Ryuki, Yamakura Ruka, Yamamoto Kenshin, Miyanoiri Yamato and Noujo Kishin. Only 20 contestants would proceed to the fourth screening.[23]

Fourth Screening[]

As part of the training camp from January to April 2022, a fourth screening was held.

After the 20 participants were assigned to four groups during the third screening, they went through various training sessions at weekend training camps held every Saturday and Sunday. First, the participants underwent a "medical checkup" to ensure that there were no abnormalities in their health, and then they were assigned a curriculum designed to raise the level of their individual skills. As part of this checkup, a "physical test" was performed and the five contestants who performed best were revealed.[24]

  1. Sorematsu Kensuke
  2. Guilherme Massayuke Tomazi Nishimura
  3. Suzuki Rui
  4. Okao Kohaku
  5. Sato Shigetora

Afterwards, basic lessons were held for each category. Fourteen candidates who passed the vocal section participated in the vocal training, singing the songs they passed the third screening with and receiving advice. Fifteen candidates participated in the rap training. Starting from that weekend training camp, all participants were required to perform with a microphone regardless of the category they had passed. Dance lessons were mandatory for all, including those with no experience. Starting with "rhythm training", a basic dance lesson, and then "final spurt training", a lesson that requires physicality and endurance, in which the contestants simply repeat simple moves over and over again. Additionally, they practiced "choreography", for which they learned simple choreography on the spot and danced together. The reason for this rigorous training was that "an artist's concert lasts about two hours, during which the dancer must dance powerfully and with a smile on their face. To be able to perform on stage, one must be as physically fit as an athlete."[25]

Following the basic training, each group was assigned an original song, with the music directed by EXILE SHOKICHI and tailored to each group's color. "Z FACTION" received "Coyote" as their theme song, "LIL LEAGUE" received "Rollah Coaster", "KIDMATIC" received "Giant Steps" and "CROONERZ" received "Water Baby".[26][27] While planning to practice the songs in the upcoming lessons, the weekend training camp was temporarily suspended due to the spread of COVID-19. The candidates were sent a video of the choreography ahead of time, and they were to practice on their own. The training camp resumed without incident.

On the April 3 broadcast, an interim check of the choreography and dance of the assigned songs was held. Each group performed their dance performance of the assigned song in front of the producers, and the groups' tentative ranking was announced after the check. Only three groups would be allowed to pass the fourth screening, which would be held three weeks later, and the lowest ranked group would be eliminated.[28][29]

Interim Tentative Ranking (Choreography/Dance)
  1. LIL LEAGUE
  2. KIDMATIC
  3. Z FACTION
  4. CROONERZ

On the April 17 broadcast, the interim ranking of "Vocal and Rap" was announced.[30]

Interim Tentative Ranking (Vocal/Rap)
  1. Z FACTION
  2. CROONERZ
  3. LIL LEAGUE
  4. KIDMATIC

For the final judging of the fourth screening, each group performed their original theme song as a comprehensive performance combining dance, singing, and rapping in front of the male division producers inside a TV studio. On the May 1 broadcast, the results were announced. The three groups that passed and would proceed to the final screening at Nippon Budokan were "LIL LEAGUE", "KIDMATIC" and "CROONERZ", while "Z FACTION" was eliminated at this point. However, as six of the seven members of "Z FACTION" would advance to the final stage as members of another group, only Sato Shigetora would be eliminated here. For this reason, EXILE HIRO made a proposal: After discussion among the producers, it was decided that Sato Shigetora would join "KIDMATIC" because "he had worked so hard and shined so brightly, and we did not want him to give up". Ultimately, all 20 contestants proceeded to the Budokan stage.[31]

On April 25, 2022, the original songs of the four groups were officially released on streaming platforms.[32][33][34][35][36]

Final Screening[]

On April 8, it was announced that the final screening of the boys division titled iCON Z 2022 ~Dreams For Children~ would be held live at Nippon Budokan on Saturday, May 21, 2022.[37] The candidates would not only perform their original assigned songs, but also team up with EXILE TRIBE's senior groups and collaborate with them in front of a live audience. "LIL LEAGUE" would perform with THE RAMPAGE, "KIDMATIC" would perform with FANTASTICS, and "CROONERZ" would perform with BALLISTIK BOYZ.[38] The songs that were chosen for those collaborations were "THROW YA FIST",[39][40] "Flying Fish"[41][42] and "Animal".[43][44]

In preparation for the final stage, a 11-day training camp was held, during which the three groups practiced their collaborative songs. On the last day, a "final preliminary check" was held and the final tentative ranking was announced (Marc Eiron injured his foot at the end of the training camp, thus CROONERZ was left with five members for the pre-finals check).[45]

Final Tentative Ranking
  1. KIDMATIC
  2. LIL LEAGUE
  3. CROONERZ
  • On May 14, 2022, it was announced that contestant Nishiguchi Sora was discovered to have violated the terms and conditions of the audition and that after ascertaining the situation, confirming the facts, discussing the situation with the applicant and his family, and considering their wishes, it was decided not to allow the applicant to participate in the final round of judging. Thus, only 19 contestants would participate in the final screening.[46]

Aftermath[]

Ultimately, LIL LEAGUE was announced as the winning team at the iCON Z 2022 ~Dreams For Children~ boys division final, while KIDMATIC and CROONERZ were eliminated and disbanded.[47]

After the results of the final screening were announced, general producer EXILE HIRO commented that "This time it was a team competition, so LIL LEAGUE is the winner, but if you look at each member individually, there were members with high potential, so I would like to seriously consider them." and "[...] I was really impressed with all 19 of them, and I felt that if I were to call them by audition, I would say that they all passed the audition. Each of them has various stories in their life, like SHOKICHI who failed the audition once and became (a member of) EXILE, so I would like to cherish the encounter with them and continue to be the one who can provide a new story for each of them.", hinting at possible future plans for the other contestants who did not win.[48][49]

During one of the later episodes of ~Yume no Audition Variety~ Dreamer Z, it was revealed that four months after the final screening, the 13 unsuccessful contestants were gathered together and told by HIRO that there would be a new story for them outside of LIL LEAGUE, and that they would be given a chance to take on the next challenge. The second chapter of "iCON Z" would be about to begin.[50][47]

On July 23, 2022, at the third concert of BATTLE OF TOKYO TIME 4 Jr.EXILE titled BATTLE OF iCON Z, it was announced that a total of 22 people would participate in the second chapter of iCON Z's boys division: the 13 finalists of the first chapter would be joined by 9 new contestants: DEEP SQUAD members Higa Suzuki, Sugiyama Ryoji and Uhara Yuhi (who would also continue their group activities), 5 D.LEAGUERs (professional dancers performing in Japan's first official dance league D.LEAGUE) and Sasaki Riku, the winner of EXILE ATSUSHI's "Dream Support Project". Overall, the second chapter would aim to debut multiple groups while trying out various combinations.[51][52][53][54][55][56]

Training Camp[]

In October 2022, the second chapter of the boys division started airing, and it was announced that this part of the audition would be very different from the first chapter. At first, a training camp was held in Chiba Prefecture, for which the 22 contestants lived together in a dormitory, eating and sleeping together. At the camp, they underwent numerous training exercises that pushed them to their limits, and prepared assignments that would later be evaluated. The first assignment was a dance that was mandatory for all the members, and the assigned song was "PERFORMER'S D.N.A." by THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE, with a high-difficulty choreography made for the audition and a freestyle part in the middle of the song.[57][58] Since the 13 contestants from the first chapter had danced to this song before, the aim was to encourage interaction by teaching the choreography to the 9 newcomers. In addition to the mandatory dance lessons, the contestants were also required to take individual vocal and rap lessons, and the dance lessons were not only limited to the assigned songs, but also included expressive ability lessons.[57] For the second assignment, the 11 contestants were given the choice to sing one of two songs from PSYCHIC FEVER from EXILE TRIBE, "Hotline" or "Choose One", whichever they liked better, and were trained by vocal coach Emyli.[59] For the third assignment, the 17 candidates who decided to be in the "Rap Division" were asked to perform the song "ON FIRE" by SWAY with self-written lyrics, and were instructed by SWAY himself.[60]

The second half of the training camp took place in Tokyo and included "artist lessons" given and prepared by senior artists of LDH: Zin, Yamamoto Shogo and Iwaya Shogo from THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE, and Nakatsuka Yuta from GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE. Then, HIRO, the general producer, explained the system of the second chapter: It would not be the producers who decide who passes or fails, but the fans and viewers. Furthermore, the number of successful applicants would not have been determined yet, and only those who were approved by fans and viewers would be able to make their debut.[57]

A month after the training camp started, the contestants were checked by the producers, instructors and staff for their assignments. All factors, including performance on the day, how they worked during the camp, and their growth rate as well as commitment to the task, were evaluated and rankings were announced. The results were used to organize new groups, and their debut chances would not be determined by the individual, but by the group.[57][59]

On the October 23 broadcast, the ranking (top 4) of the "Vocal Division" was announced. Sasaki Riku was absent, so only 10 contestants participated:[59][58]

Later, the names of the groups and their original assigned song were announced. Additionally, a new system of "creative coordinators", the first of its kind in LDH auditions, was introduced. The coordinator would provide support for all aspects of the creative process, including the group's worldview, costumes, and choreography. Group 3 was named "THE JET BOY BANGERZ", meaning "noisy personalities coming together to express themselves in a blazing fire like a jet engine", their original concept song inspired by the members was revealed to be "RAGING BULL", and their creative coordinator was chosen to be EXILE AKIRA. Group 2 was named "KID PHENOMENON", representing "the new wave of EXLE TRIBE's upcoming generation, creating a new phenomenon with their performance and skills", their original concept song was revealed to be "C'mon", and their creative coordinator was chosen to be NAOTO. Group 1 was named "WOLF HOWL HARMONY", representing the melancholy, lone wolf-like cry of the heart, a kind of howl, of each member, that is destined to come together, their original concept song was revealed to be "LOVE RED", and their creative coordinator was chosen to be PKCZĀ®.[62] To determine the parts of the original songs, each group member was asked to submit their own choice of parts instead of the producer assigning them. If there was a conflict with another member, the contestants would have to appeal to the producer at the recording session and win the song on their own merits.[63] Along with singing, the three groups were also tasked with dance assignments, such as created the choreography for their song.[64]

Lastly, the judging method for the second chapter was introduced. Instead of selecting a grand prix winner from among the three groups, various kinds of support from fans would be converted into points, and if a group earned the specified number of points within a certain time period, they would be selected to debut. In other words, there would be a possibility that all teams could be accepted or rejected. All in all, three challenges were prepared to earn points. The first was the "Musha Shugyo", a nationwide performance tour that senior LDH groups had also experienced, and the number of audience members attending the free live performances would be converted into points.[64] The second was SNS activity, with official group accounts on major social networking sites being set up to provide a variety of information, and the number of followers and "likes" would be converted into points. The third and last challenge was the distribution of original music, and the number of times a song was streamed would be converted into points. A total number of 1,000,000 points were required by each group for a debut decision.[65]

On the December 11 broadcast, Sasaki Riku announced that he wanted to withdraw from the audition, and after discussing with his members, he left WOLF HOWL HARMONY. The group would continue with four members.[65]

The essential task for the second screening was "dance". The song to perform to was selected to be "Can You See The Light" by ƘMI. For the first half of the song, the contestants had to perform a prescribed choreography, and in the second half, they had to come up with their own original choreography.[6][66]

In addition, the contestants were judged on either "vocals" or "rap" or both as an optional task. The songs for the vocal judging were selected to be "First Love" by Utada Hikaru and "Tsutsumi Komu You ni..." by MISIA, while the song for the rap judging was selected to be "Bijin" by Chanmina.[66] What was required is the ability to sing and dance in a comprehensive performance.[6]

Ultimately, 30 contestants were chosen to move to the third screening.[6]

Third Screening[]

From January to April 2022, there was a training camp including the third screening.[19]

For the third screening, a panel of judges/producers headed by Tosaka Hiroomi was introduced. The panel included ALYSA, a composer and music producer from HYBE LABELS JAPAN,[67] Emyli, a singer-songwriter and vocal producer, ZERO, a music supervisor and sound producer, and Ruu, a choreographer, dance trainer and founder of the dance crews "Fabulous Sisters" and "USEN-NEXT I'moon".[68] Additionally, it was revealed that the final girl group would be composed of 5 members, with all members singing and dancing.[69]

For the performances, the 30 contestants were divided into 6 groups with 5 girls each (group A to F) after an individual one-minute self-promotion screening in a TV studio in front of the respective division producers.[70]

From April 17, the names of the teams and profiles of the members were released on Twitter.

On May 21, 2022, shortly after the final screening of the boys division held at Nippon Budokan, it was announced that the audition of the girls division would be broadcasted from June 12 on TV TOKYO's Dreamer Z.[71][72][73][74]

The aim of the group judging in the third screening was to help teammates improve in their respective areas of expertise and to raise each other's level. However, since success or failure was based solely on individual evaluations, the candidates were rivals even if they were members of the same group. In order to train for the performances, the contestants entered a training camp held every weekend, including dance lessons given by Ruu and vocal lessons given by Emyli.[75]

In the June 19 broadcast, it was revealed that the third screening and 1st official mission would be an original song titled "CHILI CHOCOLATE" written by producer ALYSA. The song would have five parts centered around two main vocalists, with the choreography for each of the parts being different. However, the contestants had only one month to prepare. Ultimately, only 20 out of the 29 girls would be able to advance to the next mission, and 9 would be eliminated.[76] After the 6 teams performed the song in front of the producers, the top 20 contestants of the third screening were announced in a ranking format:[77]

Top 20 (1st mission)
  1. Ohyama Ruan
  2. Tanaka Riria
  3. Cavery Hana
  4. Ogasawara Anri
  5. Kitadera Uwa

  15. Yakura Nanai
  16. Yamazaki Ria
  17. Daley Tabatha Mia
  18. Nishihara Noa
  19. Yamamoto Mina
  20. Nishida Runa

With this announcement, the 9 contestants who were not ranked in the top 20 were eliminated at this point in the competition. The eliminated contestants included Kikuchi Aira, Ando Yuuna, Ikeda Honoka, Tokunaga Junko, Hirano Yuzuki, Fukawa Nanami, Ohmura Yuria, Seshimo Coco and Hatae Maisa.

  • On June 13, 2022, it was announced that contestant Yamauchi Moana had withdrawn from the audition after the third screening in order to fulfill another dream. Thus, the show would continue with 29 contestants.[78]

Fourth Screening[]

As part of the training camp, a fourth screening and 2nd mission was held.

On July 2, an official Instagram account for the girls division of the iCON Z audition was opened and the profile pictures of the 20 contestants who had advanced to the 2nd mission were published.[79][80][81]

For the 2nd mission, the 20 candidates were divided into 4 new teams and given two tasks. The first was to brush up the original song "CHILI CHOCOLATE" with the new 5-member teams. The second was for the teams to perform a newly prepared dance track. In addition, the second half of the track (one minute) was required to have original choreography and composition (created by the contestants themselves). To prepare for the 2nd mission, the contestants entered a weekend training camp.[82]

Ultimately, only 15 of the 20 contestants would advance to the next round of judging. They would perform as teams, but the judging would be on an individual basis. So even if they were teammates, they were rivals in the competition.[83]

On July 17, an official YouTube channel for the girls division of the iCON Z audition was opened. On the same day, dance practice videos of the song "CHILI CHOCOLATE" by the 4 teams of the 2nd mission were uploaded on the channel.

After the weekend training camp, the judging for the 2nd mission was conducted in a TV studio, with the contstants wearing professional hair, makeup and costumes. First, the candidates performed their choreography to the dance track one team at a time. In preparation for this performance, each team had chosen a dance leader who was mainly in charge of their original choreography and composition: Kitadera Uwa for "Little Devil", Yanagibashi Uno for "Aimer", Okada Ayuno for "DIVA" and Sasaki Tsukushi for "Crescent". After the performances, the ranking of the teams for the dance track was announced:[84]

Second was the judging for the original song "CHILI CHOCOLATE". The key point was whether each group could add their own arrangements and show their individuality even within the same assigned song.[85]

Fifth Screening[]

As part of the training camp, a fifth screening and 3rd mission was held. The aim of the 3rd mission was to draw out the hidden potentials of the contestants by removing them from the parts in which they excel.

The candidates were given a new original song, "ONE BITE" (produced and composed by ALYSA), to perform. In the judging to be held two months later, three newly formed teams with five contestants each, "foxiest", "Libellula" and "Reverie", would present the song. Ultimately, only 10 of the 15 contestants would advance to the next mission.[87][88]

They nominated 10 candidates in total, in 2 patterns of "5 people you want to see now".[89]

Final Screening[]

The second was to brush up on the original songs "CHILI CHOCOLATE" and "ONE BITE", with the top five individual ranking contestants performing "CHILI CHOCOLATE" (ANRI, UWA, RUAN, MIRANO, MINA), and the five contestants ranking from 6 to 10 performing "ONE BITE" (UNO, TSUKUSHI, HANA, AYUNO, RIA). For the third task, the contestants were divided into two groups and challenged with a new original song, a ballad titled "Lonely". To prepare for the tasks, a final training camp was held.[91][92]

On September 25, 2022, the final episode of the girls division aired and the successful candidates who were able to become members of the final group were announced. Initially, a 5-member group was planned to be formed, but after ƘMI saw the performances of the 10 finalists, the number was changed to 7 for the best balance and team composition. The seven members with the highest overall rating were selected to make their debut: ANRI, UWA, RUAN, MIRANO, MINA, HANA and RIA. After the final, the members would enter a period of preparation for the full launch of the group.[93][94][95][96][97]
